Message from the President August 2008

Tuesday August 12

Dear Fellow CHLA Member,

I hope you are enjoying our summer so far in spite of a very rainy July and August!

The reason for my note is to make you aware of a couple of very important meetings which are occurring next month which you will no doubt want to mark off in your calendars.

1.  2008 ARCHITECTS OF ALLIANCES COURSE SEPT 10/11, 2008 IN TORONTO

The 2008 Architects of Alliances course is taking place in Toronto on September 10th and 11th at the University Club. For the registration information and agenda please visit the CHLA website: http://www.chlassoc.com . The course is all-new this year with a focus on the key issues involved in conducting due diligence.

Successful deal-making depends on an effective due diligence process. Whether you are buying or selling, effective due diligence is critical to understanding the project and partner to develop a better deal-making strategy and to strike a better deal that will maximize the value of the opportunity and begin a successful partnership. Today’s multi-functional due diligence often requires participation of many people within an organization (Finance, Medical, Marketing, Manufacturing, Quality Assurance, etc.) – and unless they have direct experience with due diligence there is little formal training available for them. The 2008 Architects of Alliances course has assembled an all-star faculty to share their experiences and provide instruction on conducting due diligence and how to use due diligence findings in negotiations and deal-making.

About the faculty -
• All are senior management, including 3 CEOs
• All highly experienced in deals, deal making and due diligence
• Representing A-List Companies who are in the news, Esperion, Nektar, OSI, etc.
• Experience at Big Pharma including Pfizer, Novartis, Lilly, etc.

Message from the President March 2008

Wednesday March 26

Dear CHLA Member,

As the thermometer is slowly moving upward and the snow is beginning to recede, it is my pleasure to share some quick thoughts with you as your new CHLA President.

First and foremost, I want to thank Mark Nawacki, our Past President, for doing such an excellent job during 2006 and 2007. During these past two years, Mark led the CHLA Board in bringing great meetings, speakers, and activities to all CHLA members. Mark will remain in the Office of the President during 2008 to ensure the same quality will continue in everything that we do.

Every business development professional understands that it is through personal relationships that we bring value to our respective companies and to the Canadian healthcare industry. When the CHLA was founded in the early 1990s, it was created with the concept that networking was an integral part of deal-making. That principle remains fundamental to what the CHLA is all about. After fifteen years of growth, 110 member companies and over 170 individual members, of which 13 sit on the board, the CHLA still operates with a very straightforward recipe to success: Creating value in order to bring business development professionals together. As your 2008 CHLA President this is my mandate and I look forward to achieving this with your help and the assistance of an enthusiastic and incredibly capable group of people whom I work with on the board of the CHLA.

In terms of upcoming activities for 2008, we will have a steady stream of chapter meetings in both Montreal and Toronto, with the former occurring on March 19 at Theratechnologies. Watch for details regarding our next Toronto Chapter meeting.

As well , please mark your calendars for the CHLA Summer Meeting which will be held this coming June 11-13 at Niagara-on-the-Lake. The focus of the meeting will be “Effective Negotiating.” The CHLA summer organizing committee, consisting of Isabelle Trempe, Amal Khouri, Leanne Souquet and Benoit Hebert have arranged to bring up Derrick Chevalier from Harrison - Chavalier (http://www.h-c.com/index.html), a US-based company which specializes in effective negotiating. Harrison Chevalier works with many blue-chip companies such as ATT and Deloite & Touche and is one of the foremost companies on negotiating. This meeting will include a workshop with a customized interactive workbook and is a must for anyone in your organization involved in deal making.

As I sign off before seeing you at the June/08 Summer CHLA meeting, I must offer our ongoing thanks to Regina Seidel who keeps the CHLA office running so smoothly.

Very Best Regards,

Neil Mellor
CHLA President
